About Cheryl Robinson

For the past (8) years, Cheryl Robinson, aka Maiah’s Mom has conjured up numerous innovative ideas and concepts as Owner and Director of Kid’s Crafts in Detroit, Michigan. She has successfully engaged and delighted thousands of youngsters, adults and families in creating a series of unique and completely original crafts.  “Dubbed” The Jetsons of Arts & Crafts for originality, creativity and simplicity, she is often invited to develop and provide activities for Corporate Events, Non-For Profit Organizations and Private entities.

The idea for Kid's Crafts originated as a result of Cheryl witnessing her daughter Maiah at a very young age; assist her in completing a potpourri pie.   “She could actually make it with "adult supervision." That led Cheryl to believe young children could do crafts far more creative than just cutting, coloring, pasting, gluing, etc. She realized children could make more "sophisticated" craft projects.  In October, 2000 she began an arts & crafts program in her home and named it, “Kid’s Crafts.”  The program met “one Saturday a Month.”  Kid’s Crafts later became, and still continues to be, an After-School Vendor in Michigan.

In February, 2001 Cheryl came up with an idea for a pen and pencil holder that looked like a cup of hot cocoa.  She called it, The Hot Chocolate Organizer.  Her idea won first place (General Crafts Category) in Disney Published Family Fun Magazine’s Craft Contest. Her award winning creation was featured in the March 2002 Issue of the Magazine and in Family Fun Home. Her most recent success happened in November, 2008 when she was invited on the Martha Stewart Show to share her latest invention, “The Crafty Buffet Oven.”  The show is scheduled to air February 18, 2009.  Cheryl hopes to have her own TV Show entitled, The Crafty Buffet with Maiah’s Mom in the near future.

About The Crafty Buffet

“Many (not all) of the projects from The Crafty Buffet are food related!  Cheryl says, “It goes back to when I was a kid and coloring pictures of food, especially “fun foods,” gave me great joy!  I would make a hamburger “look” as if it could be eaten off the page and would skim through coloring books looking for pictures of food.  If it had none – I didn’t want it!  Now as an adult, I skim through stores looking for objects to make into food related crafts!”

The Origin of “The Crafty Buffet Oven”

Initially, I purchased several of the boxes to keep the many craft materials that had accumulated over the years.   However, on this particular day, I was in my basement and “it started to look like an oven to me!”  It began with the Lid which looked like an “oven” door.  Once I “saw” the door, I could “imagine” the window, the handle, the burners, etc!  The box literally transformed right before my eyes!

The original oven was created as a Prop for transporting supplies and materials for my many “food-related” craft projects.  It was painted white, did not have a light and the thought of having a “coloring book companion” did not exist!  After all…it was only a Prop!

“Far More Than A Prop.”

Originally created to transport items, The Crafty Buffet Oven was never intended to be used as a play oven or to display artwork.  The thought to maintain and store craft supplies i.e. crayons, markers, construction paper, pencils, etc., came much later along with the idea to use the sheet protector as a window for viewing.  Children could get their utensils from within the oven, be creative coloring or drawing, and then put their "creations" in the window to exhibit.  The simple idea that began in my basement turned into a truly unique and original concept.  Clearly, far more creative than the early “Prop” it was intended to be!

“Artistic” cooks can color pictures of food from The Crafty Buffet Oven Coloring Book (thanks to gifted, Artist/Illustrator, John Rios!), slide their pictures in the window and turn on the light to display!  “Pretend” chefs can purchase other Crafty Buffet Oven Kits (pie, pizza, cupcakes, cookies and more!) and use as a play oven with toy pots and pans!  Then, “when not in use,” parents can use The Crafty Buffet Oven to store those “wonderful” art creations youngsters bring home from school year after year!

A fun and useful craft for ALL ages, The Crafty Buffet Oven Kit affords parents, grandparents, step-parents, educators and others, opportunity to spend quality time engaging with children!  What better way to spend time together?

Other Kits and DVDs soon to be available at www.thecraftybuffet.com are Pie, Pizza, Cupcakes, Sundaes, Ice Cream Cones, Hamburgers, Hotdogs, Popcorn, etc!  Look for them in the upcoming months!
